Interpretation Modalities

A quality simultaneous translation company always delivers its services at the agreed
upon time, always prioritizing and presenting a result compatible to each type of
translation. We present some of the modalities below, check it out.

Simultaneous Translation

Inside a soundproof booth, the interpreter listens to the speaker through headphones in one language and, through microphones connected to the listeners receptors, transmits the speaker’s words in another language. It is the most used modality of interpretation in big events because it does not interfere with the duration of the event. It is also recommended for smaller meetings using the portable equipment.

Whispered Translation

Simultaneous interpretation for two people maximum, without the use of sound equipment for simultaneous translation.

Consecutive Translation

Consecutive interpreting or translation is when the interpreter listens to the source-language speaker and after part of the speech reproduces it in the target language for the audience. Normally, in consecutive translation during a speech the interpreter stands next to the caller.

Escort Interpreting

That is the translation modality where the interpreter escorts an executive or delegation in external visits or business meetings, both in the country of residency and abroad. It can be performed with the portable simultaneous translation equipment or without any equipment, using the whispered interpretation or consecutive interpretation. The escort interpreting is frequently used in inspections, audits and visits to factories and other industrial facilities, as consecutive translation or utilizing the mini portable equipment for simultaneous interpretation. Good manners, discretion, friendliness, and conscience about cultural differences are essential prerequisites for interpreters who work in international missions.

History of Simultaneous Interpretation

At the end of World War II, with the advent of the Nuremberg Trial of Nazi war criminals, the problem arises of carrying out a trial in four main languages: English, French, Russian and German. Consecutive translation would be unthinkable because it would stretch the Court sessions duration, and would also complicate witness testimonies, district Attorneys, lawyers, judges, and defendants, all speaking different languages. The person responsible for finding a solution to the problem was Colonel Leon Dostert, General Eisenhower’s interpreter. IBM lent the equipment for free, in view of the great merchandising its use would bring in such an occasion. Dostert summons young consecutive interpreters and other people with no experience in interpretation, but with high linguistic skills and, after a few months of experimentation and intense training, emerges the embryo of what would become simultaneous interpretation as we know it today (cf.: IACI 1996; Gaiba 1998).
